Tags are the engine. Every post is labeled with its artist, characters, source series and descriptive attributes, and search combines them, so pulling together everything tied to one character, franchise or artist takes a single query. Video posts ride the same tag system as still images, and the interface runs in several languages, with English, Japanese and Portuguese among them.
An official Android client carries the board onto phones, and Sankaku Plus, the site's supporter tier, strips advertising for members. In practice the tags dictate how the place gets used: less a feed than an index, and the fastest route to a complete visual trail for one series, artist or character.
